Things started Monday morning when 52-year-old Brian Groom went out hunting in the Birch Creek area. The Clark County man made a kill, but nearly killed himself bringing it home.
After he didn’t show up that day or the next morning, his family called police to file a missing person report. A search crew immediately took to the area. Leif Issaacson and partner Thomas Wilson, of Desert Air Ag, found Groom’s truck, and soon after found Groom himself, trapped under his ATV. His kill, a cow elk, was tied to the back, likely the reason he wasn’t able to free himself.
As it turns out, Groom had been trapped under the ATV in three to four inches of snow for 31 hours. He was rushed to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where he was deemed to be in critical condition, suffering from massive blunt force trauma, frost bite and hypothermia.
