[Morning Briefs] Drunks and Desperation in December

7 Dec

See Mr. Mathew Christian, left, who was arrested for a horrible aggravated DUI. See the Chick-fil-A mascot, right, who drives people to do ANYTHING for delicious chicken sandwiches.

There’s something about the holiday season that makes all the drunks and desperate thieves come out in droves. Or maybe seeing people get drunk and desperate, as we sip our cocoa and watch A Charlie Brown Christmas, just makes us notice the mayhem even more. Whatever the case may be, we’ve seen all the drunks and thieves and stab-crazy freaks just about daily, it seems! Today? Oh, it’s no different.

  • A male subject is at large after attempting to steal a lottery ticket box from the Kicks 66 store on Bench Road. Pocatello Police didn’t give any details, so I’m going to guess it was one of those giant, heavy scratch ticket boxes. It’s more fun that way. As the man was trying to get away with the box, the store clerk, who must have been a pretty savvy guy, chased the would-be thief and recovered the box and all the tickets. The man fled the scene in an older, red Ford pickup truck. The real question though, is how he planned on cashing those winners in. “Well, sir, it looks like you have 200 winning tickets, you must be very lucky.”
  • One man is in the hospital and another is in jail after a bad accident at 2:45 this morning. Yeah, it’s another Pocatello DUI. Police arrested the driver, 26-year-old Mathew Christian, after he crashed his car on the east side of the Center Street underpass. His passenger, a 25-year-old male, was taken to the hospital with “significant injuries.” Those injuries must have been pretty bad, because Christian was charged with aggravated DUI, a charge that comes with 30 days to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, and a license suspension of one to five years.
  • About 75 people stood in line at the new Chick-fil-A in Ammon this morning, in hopes of winning coupons for free Chick-fil-A for a year. People came from as far as Florida for the grand opening of the new chicken fast food chain, but mostly to get those free coupons, I’m guessing. Apparently you had to be one of the first 100 to be eligible for the coupon, which begs the question: Why were there only 75 people and why didn’t anybody tell me about this?? [LN8]
  • Blackfoot held their city council runoff election yesterday, and the results are in! The winner is Butch Hulse! And no, despite his name, Butch Hulse is not a villain from a 1980s cyber-action movie. [LN8]
