WOAHWOAHWOAH. First of all, don’t run out of your house thinking there’s a fire on South Second Avenue right now. There isn’t. But this Friday at about 10 a.m., there will be! And when you see that fire, just walk away. Forget about it. Pretend it doesn’t exist.
See, the Pocatello Fire Department is going to set the fire themselves as an annual training exercise. According to a press release, firefighters will set fire to an abandoned building at 2721 South Second Ave. Friday morning. After the training is done, they will let the building completely burn to the ground. That’s right, firefighters are intentionally setting a building on fire and letting it burn–for training.
I know, I know, the whole idea is to have a realistic environment in which our local firefighters can gain valuable experience to better serve our community and save lives. Just remember to recite that mantra Friday while you’re trying to navigate through traffic, tune out the blaring sirens, and breathe through the plumes of smoke, which will be very realistically blowing through Pocatello.
Whatever you do, just make sure you ignore the fire itself. It’s no big deal, it’s under control, so don’t worry about it. Just pretend it’s a big, loud, smoky, regular building that won’t be standing at the end of the day. No big deal!
