Here’s a freak accident if I’ve ever heard one. Officials in northwest Montana said a bullet that killed 39-year-old Nevada hunter Steve Stevenson on Sept. 19 first went through a grizzly bear.
Stevenson and 20-year-old Ty Bell were tracking the animal, which Bell thought was a black bear, at the Idaho-Montana border. Bell shot the bear once, and the duo tracked it into heavy cover, where the 400-pound beast attacked Stevenson. Bell fired several shots at the bear, but one bullet passed through the animal and struck Stevenson, killing him.
Tests on the .30.06 bullet found DNA from both the grizzly bear and Stevenson, proving Bell’s story. Lincoln County Sheriff Roby Bowe said he doesn’t think charges will be fired, as this is all just a “horribly tragic accident.”
