The Standard-Examiner is reporting that police have identified the suspect in yesterday’s shooting of six Ogden police officers as 37-year-old Matthew David Stewart. The shooting took place Wednesday night as the officers served a warrant at 3268 Jackson Ave. in Ogden. Stewart allegedly opened fire on the officers with what witnesses believe was a high-powered rifle, injuring five and killing one, Ogden Police Officer Jared Francom.
Francom, a father of two who had been with the Ogden Police Department since 2005, was a part of the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force with the other officers. They knocked on the door of the house to serve a warrant, and entered when they didn’t get an answer. That’s when police believe Stewart opened fire on them.
Ogden police quickly sealed off the street and called in a SWAT team, eventually cornering Stewart in a shed in the backyard. The five injured officers remain hospitalized in serious to critical condition. Stewart is under guard at a local hospital, but police would not describe his injuries.
