The Portneuf District Library was full of a little more love than usual during its Love Your Library event tonight. While Love Your Library is a national event, the Portneuf District Library took the opportunity to tie it in with today’s holiday, Valentine’s Day.

According to Amanda Bowden, children’s librarian, the library decided to take the Love Your Library event to help orient patrons with the new changes to the library. It may not be the largest library in the area but it is definitely not one to be overlooked, as it seems to be growing. “We’re kind of starting to out-grow spaces,” said Jeanne Farnworth, the young adult librarian.

Because of their ever growing collection of books, the library has transformed their community room into the children’s book area and moved all of the young adult books into the old children’s area to form the new Teen Zone. The librarians were quick to assure that the movement doesn’t stop the community from using the old community room, but did say it called for a little bit more planning on everyone’s part.

With a modest turnout, the library had a steady stream of people roaming from activity to activity. Because the library is located in a Chubbuck neighborhood it has a lot of young patrons, said Farnworth, which is why both of those sections of the library have seen such expansion, she explained.

While the library is proud to show off their new layout, tonight was more about having a good time. The library had set up four Valentine’s Day-themed activities that were geared toward all age ranges. The Teen Zone was set up with “make it take it” bookmarks, the main lobby was home to both a couples match up, where adults were asked to pair up famous couples throughout history, and an “estimation station” where the closest estimation of goodies in a jar yielded the guesser a prize. Farnworth said the library took every opportunity to promote math and science to its young patrons.

For readers unable to attend last night’s events, the library is holding a contest for the month of February giving people the opportunity to win some prizes. All you need to do is go to the library and write the reasons you love the Portneuf District Library on a paper heart.
